The University of Arizona is a comprehensive, Public Research 1 institution and the only land grant, four-year Hispanic Serving Institution in Arizona. UArizona offers traditional on-campus undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees. Located in Tucson, the University serves the state’s southern regions as well as northern Mexico. The University partners with several local high schools through the Los Gatos Serving Pathway Grant to support student success. These schools include Catalina High School, Pueblo High School, Rincon High School, and Rio Rico High School.
Together, we work to expand high-quality dual enrollment offerings in pre-calculus and strengthen early college-going outreach activities, including fiscal wellness. The FAMILIA team is proudly collaborating with these high schools for the fifth year of the Los Gatos program. As part of the program, the high schools receive $5,000 per semester to cover expenses related to activities and materials that support college-going culture and assist teachers in becoming credentialed by the Higher Learning Commission to teach dual enrollment pre-calculus mathematics courses.
The purpose of Project Outreach FAMILIA (Forwarding Academic Mechanisms Integral to Learning In the Academy) is to expand and enhance institutional capacity to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students entering higher education and earning postsecondary degrees. Developing the Los Gatos Serving Pathway will fulfill this purpose by:
- Expanding quality dual enrollment pre-calculus mathematics courses
- Creating or expanding college-going outreach at participating high schools
By preparing first-generation students in pre-calculus, this project will increase the likelihood that students persist through STEM coursework in college and obtain a STEM degree. Outreach efforts promote skills that prepare students and their families to be well-informed, college-bound individuals, including financial literacy required in planning.
